Narrator

Psalm 23

1A Psalm by David. Yahweh is my shepherd; I shall lack nothing.

2He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters.

3He restores my soul. He guides me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.

4Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me. Your rod and your staff, they comfort me.

5You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil. My cup runs over.

6Surely goodness and loving kindness shall follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in Yahweh’s house forever.

8This book of the law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it; for then you shall make your way prosperous, and then you shall have good success.

9Haven’t I commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Don’t be afraid. Don’t be dismayed, for Yahweh your God is with you wherever you go.”

16Yahweh’s face is against those who do evil, to cut off their memory from the earth.

17The righteous cry, and Yahweh hears, and delivers them out of all their troubles.

18Yahweh is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit.

19Many are the afflictions of the righteous, but Yahweh delivers him out of them all.

A real answer from Ask, to “What does the Bible say about worry?”

Trading Worry for Trust

The Bible takes worry seriously, but it never treats it as a simple failing. Jesus speaks about it gently in the Sermon on the Mount. He points to birds and wildflowers and reminds his listeners that the Father who cares for them knows what we need too.

6In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

Psalm 23: The Lord Our Shepherd, as ItsBible explains it

  1. 23

Psalm 23 is a short song of trust, attributed to David. David was a shepherd boy before he was a king, so he knew the work well: finding grass and water, guarding the flock from predators, and counting the sheep at night. He uses that life as a picture of how God cares for him.

  2. 1 to 4

In verses 1 to 4, God is the shepherd who provides rest, guidance and protection.

  3. 4

The valley of the shadow of death may mean a dark ravine, or a time of real danger. The rod and staff were tools for defending and guiding sheep.

  4. 5 and 6

In verses 5 and 6, God becomes the host who welcomes a guest to his table and his house.

  5. 5

The table prepared in front of enemies, the oil on the head and the overflowing cup describe generous hospitality and safety, even while threats are still near.

  6. 6

Dwelling in the house of Yahweh points to belonging in God’s presence, whether in the temple or beyond this life.
